Double chin fat can now be safely removed without the need for surgical liposuction thanks to the groundbreaking formula of Kybella. Plastic surgeon Dr. Kevin Sadati is pleased to offer this treatment at his Orange County practice, as it brings beautiful and long-lasting results. Kybella is the marketing name for deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule that aids in the metabolism of fat in the body. Kybella is an FDA-approved treatment for moderate to severe submental fat underneath the chin or upper neck. If you are interested in learning more about this nonsurgical fat reduction treatment, call the Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery in Orange County, CA.

Ideal Candidates

Kybella injections are used to diminish submental fullness due to fat. There are several factors that can contribute to submental fullness, also known as a double chin, including genetics, aging, and weight gain. Candidates for Kybella must be at least 18 years old and should have firm skin under their chin. Kybella does not treat excess skin, but it helps to dissolve excess fat by breaking down fat cells. Therefore, an ideal candidate needs to have good skin elasticity before receiving Kybella. Though Kybella is most commonly used on the neck, it can be used to contour other areas of the body including the upper arms, abdomen, and flanks.

Before receiving treatment, patients will be able to consult with Dr. Sadati so that he can evaluate their skin elasticity and determine if they will be able to achieve desirable results with Kybella. If patients have substantial excess skin, Dr. Sadati may suggest alternative procedures for removing the skin. During the consultation, patients should feel free to express any questions or concerns they may have. By communicating with Dr. Sadati and his team about their desired outcome, patients will have a better chance at a successful treatment.

Preparing for Kybella

Prior to their treatment, Dr. Sadati may recommend that patients stop taking certain medications, vitamins, or supplements including Advil, vitamin E, aspirin, and fish oil. These medications can thin the blood, which may increase the chance of bruising after an injection. However, patients should always consult with their prescribing physician before stopping any medication. Additionally, men will need to shave below their chin and on the upper part of their neck before their procedure. Any further instructions will be administered by Dr. Sadati and his team prior to your treatment.

Procedure Technique

Deoxycholic acid, the active ingredient in Kybella, works by destroying the dietary fat in the submental area. It was approved by the FDA in 2015 for the use of breaking down fat cells. Once the fat is eliminated, it will not return. It typically takes 2 – 6 treatment sessions to achieve optimal results, but 79% of patients in clinical trials were very satisfied with their outcome. They also reported that they not only looked younger, but felt happier and more confident.

During/After treatment

Suzanne Rogers, our master injector, will clean the treatment area and then carefully make multiple injections underneath the chin. A topical anesthetic may be applied if requested and a local anesthetic (lidocaine) is also injected to numb the area. The Kybella will then be injected into the layer of fat beneath the skin. The entire procedure takes around five minutes to complete.

Generally, you will begin to see your results after 2 – 4 treatment sessions. If needed, you can have up to six Kybella treatments with a 4-week break between sessions. Common side effects include mild pain, redness, numbness, swelling, and bruising, and patients may need to avoid strenuous activity for 24 hours following treatment.

Kybella Neck Lipo FAQs

Long-lasting Results?

Once the Kybella treatments have destroyed the fat cells in the submental area, they are naturally released from the body. However, patients should keep a healthy, stable weight after the procedure to maintain their results.

Safety Concerns?

Kybella has been approved by the FDA, tested in over 20 clinical studies, and tried with more than 1,600 patients. These vigorous trials have confirmed the safety of Kybella and has lead to positive results for thousands of men and women. Patients should disclose their medical history during their consultation, including any current medications, herbs, and supplements. Kybella is not approved for use in patients under 18 years old and should not be used outside the neck and chin area.

Kybella Vs. Liposuction?

Kybella neck liposuction and traditional neck liposuction are both effective and similarly priced, but Kybella does not involve surgery, general anesthesia, or a lengthy recovery. Dr. Sadati will discuss both methods during your initial consultation to help determine your best treatment plan.
