KYBELLA, which was recently approved by the FDA for treating excess fat under the chin, has claimed less downtime and expense than traditional liposuction for the neck or under the chin. Due to its growing popularity as a more favorable option to cosmetic surgery, other similar products have popped up on the market. One such option is the Cool Mini by CoolSculpting. Like KYBELLA, the Cool Mini was recently approved by the FDA for treating excess fat cells under the chin giving patients additional options to get rid of their double chins.
How Does KYBELLA and Cool Mini Work?
KYBELLA is a patented synthetic form of deoxycholic acid, which is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that helps metabolize fat. The injection of KYBELLA disrupts the fat cell membrane, causing the fat cell to release its fatty contents, which the body then metabolizes like normal. This process reduces the amount of fat in the area injected, thus reducing the appearance of a “double chin.”
Cool Mini works similarly by having the patient rest their chin in a device that freezes the fat cell which causes the cell wall to tear. Though the fat cell is frozen, the skin and surrounding tissues are kept at a safe temperature. The broken fat cells will eventually thaw after the treatment, however the fluids inside are digested and released by the body.
Both KYBELLA and Cool Mini require multiple treatments, typically between two and four. Currently, both are only approved for use in the chin area, however Dr. Sadati thinks this may change soon, allowing KYBELLA especially to be used on other areas of the body. It is important to note that though these options are considered non-surgical, there can be swelling and, as a result, minimal downtime.
Which Option Is Right For Me?
RealSelf users have rated Cool Mini and KYBELLA, giving Cool Mini a 72 percent rate and KYBELLA a 100 percent rate. Dr. Kevin Sadati at the Gallery of Cosmetic Surgery offers KYBELLA at his practice, and is extremely pleased with the results. “For patients who do not want to undergo expensive surgery with a lengthy recovery time, KYBELLA is a great option. With just a few short treatments, a patient can see a significant reduction in fat under the chin.”
